Assessing capacity of corroded angle members in steel structures based on experiment and simulation

•84 angle steel members were corroded using an accelerated testing method.•The failure modes of corroded steel angles were observed from tests and simulations.•The capacities decrease with the thickness loss of the flange at a quadratic parabolic speed.•The slenderness ratio has a significant effect on the failure mode of specimens.•Applicability and accuracy of current specifications are compared and verified.
