Abstract
The whole plant of Coriandrum sativum L. is used in variety of diseases including renal ailments throughout the world. The aim of this study was to find out the nephroprotective activity of Coriandrum sativum L. against Gentamicin (GM) induced renal toxicity. Sixty Wistar albino rats were divided into ten groups. GM was injected i.p, at the dose of 100 mg/kg for 10 consecutive days for inducing nephrotoxicity. Metformin (MF) was given orally at two different doses i.e., 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg for 10 days either after inducing nephrotoxicity or along with nephrotoxicity. The fresh leaf extract of Coriandrum sativum L. was given orally at the dose of 2 ml/day for 28 day either with nephrotoxicity or after inducing the nephrotoxicity . The ethanolic extract of plant was given orally at the dose of 200 mg/kg/day for 28 day either with nephrotoxicity or after inducing the nephrotoxicity. The study indicate that C. sativum L. (fresh leaf juice as well as ethanolic extract) were showed more appreciably improvement on the kidney as compare to treatment with MF (100 as well as 50 mg/kg/day) when these treatment were given along with GM toxicity as well as after inducing the toxicity by GM. The results of this study revealed that C. sativum L. have free radical scavenging potency against increased production of reactive oxygen species by GM. Coriandrum sativum L. is more effective than MF.
