An integrated assessment of the long-term impact of municipal sewage sludge on the chemical and biological properties of soil

•Sewage sludge increased fertility and stimulated the activity of enzymes in soil.•Over the years the content of heavy metals and PAHs decreased in soil.•In non-planted soils there was lower reduction of metals and PAHs.•Presence of plants had a positive impact on enzyme activity.
