•Vitamin B1, B6 and K3 and benzophenone are effective for bacterial photoinactivation.•Bacterial photoinactivation efficacy is different in PBS and plasma.•UV–vis absorption spectrum changes in photosensitizer after UVA irradiation.•Molecule modification by UVA light is not required for the bactericidal activity.
