MRI can be used to differentiate between primary fallopian tube carcinoma and epithelial ovarian cancer.

•Rim enhancement was present in all cases of PFTC and more often continuous in PFTC than in EOC.•Rim enhancement was thicker in PFTC than in EOC; 2.3 mm was the optimal cutoff for maximal thickness.•ADC values within solid components were unhelpful in distinguishing PFTC from EOC.
