Effects of near soil surface components on soil erosion on steep granite red soil colluvial deposits

•Erosive responses of biofactors to storms on steep colluvial deposit were explored.•Plants with lower and denser canopies better conserved soil.•Canopy and biocrusts performed better than roots in reducing erosion.•Biocrusts are also important in soil conservation in subtropical region.
