The BSAT-4a broadcasting satellite was launched in September 2017. BSAT-4a has 12-GHz-band transponders for HDTV and UHDT V broadcasting services, as well as 21-GHz-band transponders for experiments aimed at next-generation broadcasting services. In the 21-GHz-band transponders, a beacon signal is available for observing rain attenuation and cross polarization discrimination (XPD) characteristics. We have started making measurements at a receiving earth station in Tokyo. We compared the measured rain attenuation and XPD characteristics in the 21-GHz band with the predicted characteristics specified in Rec. ITU-R P.618-13.
