Models for estimating daily photosynthetically active radiation in oceanic and mediterranean climates and their improvement by site adaptation techniques

•The results of the models clearly worsen when GHI is not included as input.•Models are clearly better in Mediterranean stations than in the oceanic stations.•The site adaptation technique on the oceanic zone led to a significant improvement.•The clustering based on the PAR variable allows obtaining useful models for a whole region.
