•Anatase TiO2 coating is synthesized by the hydrolyzation method and annealing.•High annealing temperature can improve crystallinity of anatase TiO2.•The TiO2-coated NCM811 annealed at 600 ℃ shows the optimal cycling performance.•The coating alleviates side effects between the electrolyte and NCM811 cathode.
