•Current estimate of shrubland soil carbon density was higher than that for all Chinese terrestrial ecosystems.•Precipitation explained more variation of soil carbon than temperature.•Soil type was a key regulator of soil carbon.•Belowground biomass appears to provide the primary source of shrubland soil carbon.
