•A novel Schiff base was derived from dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and l-lysine (Lys).•The formation of Schiff base between DAC and Lys was confirmed.•The DAC-Lys Schiff base exhibited higher antibacterial activity than DAC.•The DAC-Lys Schiff base may be a promising antibacterial agents.
