Abstract
This article proposes the development of a prototype for the monitoring of native threatened species through wireless technology. The aim of this system is the prevention of protected fauna theft in Ecuador. The operation of the prototype is based on the use of WI-FI, GPRS and GPS technologies which activate the alarm system when the device is outside the established range.The prototype consists of locator nodes placed on the animals to be monitored, these allow sending text messages that display the coordinates of the animal.The concentrator node of the network receives the information from the connected locator nodes and transfers it to a database with a web interface. Within a 10-day period 100 daily tests were carried out. To activate the audible alarm an average response time of 500 milliseconds was obtained and for the reception of the alert through SMS the average time was 7 seconds. The tests showa system effectiveness of 94%, furthermore, the obtained timesallow a quick response by the endangered animals caregivers.
