Pyrolysis mechanisms of graphene oxide revealed by ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulation

•Pyrolysis mechanisms of GO were revealed from two aspects: the carbon skeleton and the functional groups.•Hydroxyl and H2O are two main pyrolysis fragments.•Pyrolysis behaviors are temperature dependent, and at low temperature the release of functional groups dominate.•Oxygen and hydrogen density play a decisive role in pyrolysis mechanisms.
