•Generic multi-zonal modelling methodology is proposed for spray dryers.•Multi-zonal modelling methodology is applied to a counter-current dryer.•CFD results are used for the basis of different zones in the dryer.•Multi-zonal modelling results are compared with CFD and plug-flow models.
