Effects of long-term herbicide application on the crops in soybean-peanut rotations in the red soil upland of Southern China

•Effects of long-term herbicide acetochlor application on the crops in soybean-peanut rotations were evaluated.•Significant effects exist in long-term herbicide acetochlor application on crops growth, physiology and yield.•The yield reduction of long-term acetochlor application was gradually aggravated with the increasing years of application.
