•Find an acceptable lower single null equilibrium that leads to feasible physical and engineering solutions for CFETR.•It is difficult to obtain a snowflake-like configuration, due to the limits of the poloidal field coil currents.•An alternative configuration termed quasi-snowflake-plus (QSF+) was calculated and optimized.
