•It is unclear if/how xenoestrogens change hepatocellularity and hepatocyte size in fish.•Exposure of male platyfish to 17α-ethynylestradiol for 15 days did not change liver weight.•Ethynylestradiol impacted on hepatocytes as demonstrated by vitellogenin production.•Exposed males did not show proliferation of hepatocytes or changes in their volumes.•Stereology unveiled baseline hepatocellularity data that can be compared with other species.
