Abstract
To determine if maternal and neonatal Vitamin D levels are affected by body mass index. A secondary analysis of a randomized control trial from October 2016 to August 2019 on Vitamin D in pregnancy was performed to determine the association between Vitamin D levels (25(OH)D) and obesity status. Included in the study were women with a confirmed intrauterine pregnancy 12-16 weeks’ gestation. Excluded from the study were women taking Vitamin D3 supplements, had undergone bariatric surgery or had a malabsorption disorder. Maternal samples were collected in the first and third trimesters. Cord blood was collected at the time of delivery. Samples were analyzed for 25(OH)D levels. Maternal characteristics were collected from the electronic medical records and compared by weight classification. Parametric and nonparametric statistics were used as appropriate. A p value of < 0.05 was deemed statistically significant. A total of 177 gravid women were included in the study of which 42.4% were obese. There was no statistical difference in age and parity between groups. Obesity was associated with African American and Hispanic heritage (p=0.02), Table 1. Obese women were more likely to have lower Vitamin 25(OD)D levels (20.8±7.6 vs. 24.2±8.1, p=0.003), Table 1. In regard to weight classifications, pre-pregnancy body mass index was inversely related to Vitamin 25(OH)D levels, Table 2. Vitamin 25(OH)D level is a fat soluble vitamin that is inversely related to pre-pregnancy body mass index. Given the potential association between vitamin D deficiency and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, vitamin D supplementation frequency and dosage in pregnancy should take into consideration baseline weight characteristics.View Large Image Figure ViewerDownload Hi-res image Download (PPT)
