•We assess the total carbon partitioning among carbon pools in a semi-deciduous tropical forest.•Interactions of above- and belowground carbon pools mostly explained the variation of total carbon stock.•Carbon in large trees is the best predictor of aboveground carbon and total carbon.•Uncertainty estimations of carbon pools and components are described.
