Experimental study of the active and passive regeneration procedures of a diesel particulate filter in a diesel methanol dual fuel engine

•The active and passive regenerations for the DOC + DPF are studied in a DMDF engine.•Methanol is an external energy source for the active regeneration of DPF.•The active regeneration in DMDF mode is superior to that in pure diesel mode.•The passive regeneration in DMDF mode is superior to that in pure diesel mode.
