Mixed stock origin of Atlantic bluefin tuna in the U.S. rod and reel fishery (Gulf of Maine) and implications for fisheries management

•Otolith chemistry techniques were used to characterize the origin of Atlantic bluefin tuna.•Most fish caught in the Gulf of Maine originated from the east (Mediterranean Sea).•Smaller size fish were eastern origin; however, the largest fish were more likely western origin.•Mixed stock information was used to revise U.S. rod and reel fishery harvest data.
