Synthesis and performance measurement of a modified polymer dust suppressant

•Eco-friendly polymer dust suppressant was prepared by modifying sodium alginate.•IR and NMR were employed to investigate the structure of the dust suppressant.•Performance of dust suppressant were detected by spraying test.•Dust suppressant has better dust-reducing effect after adding surfactant.
