Effects of winter chilling and photoperiod on leaf-out and flowering in a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest in China

•Moderate-high chilling is needed in leaf-out for subtropical species.•Chilling outweighs photoperiod in initiating leaf-out of subtropical species.•Twig cutting experiments can be applied to subtropical evergreen species.•Lack of chilling caused substantial changes in the order of species leaf-out.
