•Coating of chitosan dissolved in lactic acid was effective to control soft mold.•Chitosan coating reduced postharvest deterioration in blackberries.•The senescence effects were slowed in blackberries coated with chitosan.•Chitosan coating had no negative effect on blackberries sensory parameters.
