•A genetic algorithm is used to optimize the thermodynamic performance of VHP.•Nine machine parameters are optimized simultaneously using NSGA-II.•Separate optimizations for warm and cold climates are presented.•A 20–30% improvement is demonstrated, compared to a base-line prototype.
