•Firmness is an important internal quality attribute of fresh fruit.•The multi-cultivar model was developed to assess firmness of three cultivars of pears.•Multi-cultivar model was superior to individual-cultivar model for firmness analysis.•MC-UVE-SPA was a powerful tool to select the most effective variables.•MC-UVE-SPA-LS-SVM model is optimal for firmness prediction of pears.
