Whole genome miRNA profiling revealed miR-199a as potential placental pathogenesis of selective fetal growth restriction in monochorionic twin pregnancies

•Placental miR-199a is upregulated in the selectively growth restricted twin of monochorionic twin pregnancies.•An increase of miR-199a is associated with impaired angiogenesis and oxidative stress in placenta.•An impaired placental angiogenesis is correlated with increased mitochondrial damage.
