•Bioaccumulation of 45 PPCPs were analysed in the rivers affected by water transfer.•The PPCPs biological residues were in the order of plankton > benthic mollusc > fish.•Higher residual levels were observed in the downstream than those in the upstream.•PPCPs bioaccumulation behaviour was associated with logKow and pKa values.•Four organic UV filters displayed trophic magnification potential in the food web.
