Time-to-death in chronic respiratory failure on home mechanical ventilation: A cohort study.

•Time-to-death on HMV widely differs between disease groups with chronic respiratory failure type 2.•Time-to-death on HMV increases with longer daily usage of ventilation up to 20 h per day.•Longer daily usage of home mechanical ventilation is an independent predictor of longer time-to-death.•More than 40% of patients with chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure on HMV died outside the hospital.•Patients with NMD, COPD and OHS are the largest disease groups on HMV.
