•Patients who had prior bariatric surgery had significantly higher adjusted risk for 30-day and 90-day readmissions than control cohort after controlling for confounders.•No differences in overall complication rates or inpatient mortality at 30 to 90-day postoperatively was observed between groups.•Patients initially treated with arthroplasty had lower reoperation rates compared to other surgical treatments.
