•This protocol was effective for accurate bracket placement in vivo.•The protocol provided a simple way to assess the fitness between the device and the dentition.•The protocol provided visibility to assess the bracket position and access to adjust the bracket placement intraoperatively.•The protocol used direct bonding, which benefited bonding strength.•Three features eliminated undercut and assisted in removal of the device after bonding.
