•Curcumin suppressed inflammatory mediators, alleviated lung injury and increased CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Tregs in ALI model.•Curcumin can upregulate the differentiation from CD4+ naïve T cells to Tregs in vitro.•Curcumin can promote Tregs ratio and increase Tregs derived IL-10 immune modulation.•Curcumin down-regulates lung M1 macrophages and up-regulates M2 macrophages in ALI.
