•TPNS restored the inhibition of m6A quantity and WTAP expression in a balloon catheter-injured rat carotid artery.•TPNS inhibited the viability, proliferation, and migration potential and promoted the m6A and WTAP expression in VSMCs.•Knockdown of WTAP and p16 released the TPNS-induced inhibition of viability, proliferation, and migration potential of VSMCs.•WTAP exerted its role via modulation of p16 expression via m6A modification VSMCs treated with TPNS.
