Local assessment of WC1 + γδ T lymphocyte subset in the different types of lesions associated with bovine paratuberculosis.

•WC1+ γδ T lymphocytes were present in the intestinal tissue of both healthy cows and those affected by paratuberculosis.•The number of WC1+ γδ T lymphocytes was higher in infected than in control cows.•WC1+ γδ T cells in lamina propria from infected animals significantly outnumbered those in control animals.•Focal lesions showed greater number WC1+ γδ T lymphocytes than diffuse paucibacillary and multibacillary forms.•In cows with focal lesions, WC1+ γδ T lymphocytes tended to be distributed at the periphery of granulomas.
