•The Vo content of Fe2O3 nanoplates is tuned by annealing at different temperatures.•Fe2O3 with the oxygen vacancy content of 17% has the highest capacity.•The SSC shows a high energy density of 58.5 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 9.32 kW kg−1.
