•Pea pectin structure was delineated by enzymatic and biochemical approaches.•Various fungal pectin-degrading enzymes were used.•Arabinose content of pea pectin (molecular weight 488,000) is 50 %.•Arabinan, a side chain of rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) is highly branched.•Pea pectin is composed of RG-I:homogalacturonan:xylogalacturonan (7:1:2).
