Abstract
•We studied eight soils formed from eight contrasting rocks in a small area.•Limited effect of depth (0–1 m) on semi-total Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn.•Lowest contents in soil on quartzite, highest on gabbro, itabirite, ironstone.•Total and amorphous Fe oxides highly correlated with all metals.•Thin sections show primary and secondary Fe oxides involved in metal retention.
