Development and application of indicators for visual landscape quality to include in life cycle sustainability assessment of Swiss agricultural farms

•A composite landscape scenery indicator applicable in life cycle assessment.•The indicator measures a farm’s contribution to visual quality of the landscape.•It consists of two sub-indicators. One for diversity and one for naturalness.•The diversity indicator measures both, land-use and seasonal diversity.•The indicator combines human values with a strictly scientific concept.
