•We investigated productivity of attached algae on three-dimensional substrates.•3D substrates increased biomass productivity by up to 300% over 2D substrates.•The relative increase in biomass productivity was greater at lower nutrient concentrations.•Strand features contributed more to productivity than base pile features in 3D substrates.
