Abstract
•Portable grinding stones (especially rotary querns) are artifacts of porous, light rocks used by the Guanches for grain molturation.•Only two sites in which grinding stones were produced were identified, suggesting that manufacturing was a specialized procedure.•X ray fluorescence analysis allows characterization of the chemical composition of raw material.•A function combining Rb/Ti and Rb/Fe ratios accurately separates the raw material of both sites.•Application of this function to rotary querns of uncertain provenance allowed the identification of the manufacturing place in 9 out of 12 cases.
