Tracking small targets in infrared image sequences under complex environmental conditions

•Small targets could be well tracked based on multiple cues fusion and Kalman filter.•The motion cue is used to find the coarse position of target.•The contrast cue is used to enhance the target and suppress the background.•The gray cue is used to obtain the more accurate target position.•Kalman filter is used to predict the ROI to reduce the computational time.
