•Magnetic bottle electron spectrometer for continuous light sources.•It detects up to 40 % of all photoelectrons emitted in 4 pi sr.•Effective background suppression by magnetic fields.•Both properties make the device suitable for gas-phase synchrotron experiments on samples with low target densities.
