•Tethered harvesting is increasingly common on steep slopes in the Pacific Northwest.•Effects on soil disturbance and sediment delivery are not well studied.•Tethered operations had more disturbance than conventional methods without tracked machines.•Yet, disturbance was still below environmental and regulatory thresholds.
