•Limonene was the most abundant compound detected in Citrus sinensis essential oil.•A stable Citrus sinensis essential oil-based nano-emulsion was developed.•The developed formulation was effective against T. confusum and C. ferrugineus.•Cold aerosol treatment highlighted the highest efficacy.
