•Field retting and accelerated retting performed in a designed pilot were investigated.•Thermal stability of the biocomposites improved with retting duration.•Retting has no effect on the crystallinity of biocomposites.•Biocomposite tensile properties reach a maximum then decreased at the end of retting.
