•Stoichiometric Zn-doped magnetite particles were prepared by thermal decomposition.•Cation distribution was obtained from XRF and Mössbauer spectroscopy.•Redistribution of Zn2+ between spinel sites occurred upon thermal treatment.•Facile preparation of carbon-coated particles as a sorbent was shown.
