•Advanced clustering was used to reveal any kind of geometric-shape on symbols.•Individual statistical analysis per symbol on the constellation diagram was applied.•Non-Gaussian symbol distortions are characterized by fragmenting the IQ diagram.•Voronoi diagrams enable flexible thresholding for constellation demodulation.•BER and OSNR requirements are reduced without additional nonlinear equalizers.
