Mechanical pruning attenuates alternate bearing in ‘Nadorcott’ mandarin

•In Citrus, cutting the flowering shoots in half restarts the meristems.•The leaves of new shoots express RNA transcripts of CiFT2 at the autumn rest period.•This allows the bud to flower even with the fruit in the cut-back shoot.•Mechanical pruning in spring favours it by promoting premature shoots.
