An efficient class of WENO schemes with adaptive order for unstructured meshes

•We extend the WENO-AO method to unstructured meshes.•Efficiency is achieved by an extension of the Parallel Axis Theorem.•The construction of smoothness indicators is also simplified.•Based on combination of a larger central stencil and smaller stencils.
