•Relatively greater metabolic activities are associated with the RCH induction.•Exposure to LaCl3 reduces O2 consumption rates during RCH induction in tissues.•Anoxia-induced RCH occurs in absence of chilling.•The RCH response is still evident among flies exposed to chilling under anoxia.
